The appearance of this, the third volume of the John Max Wulfing collection of Greek and Roman coins in Washington University, completes the publication of this collection. The previous two volumes, of Greek and Roman Republican coins respectively, have already been published by the same author in the American Numismatic Society series Ancient Coins in North American Collections. The collection is essentially a study resource, as the author notes in his introduction. Of the total of 1053 pieces published and fully illustrated here, eighteen are of varieties not already listed in RIC or BMC. These are conveniently noted on p.xxi. The bulk of the collection is contained within a chronological range extending to the reign of Hadrian, but there is a smaller selection of specimens from the reigns of Antoninus Pius and Marcus Aurelius included, together with a number of provincial issues from throughout the period. The introduction consists of a basic, reign-by-reign account of the history of the coinage during this period.
