Synopsis

Peelle (mathematics and computer science education, U. of Massachusetts, Amherst) has designed a text that allows students to teach themselves mathematical computing using the J programming language. The text, which can be used in a classroom, offers step-by-step instructions, first for using J, then for using J to perform math on the computer. The chapters cover arithmetic, fractions, comparisons, order of operations, algebra, equations, and so on, ending with function tables. A second volume is planned demonstrating mathematical problems with solutions in J. Distributed by AIDC. Annotation ©2005 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)

Synopsis

This book introduces mathematical computing using J a powerful new programming language with applications in mathematics, actuarial analysis, scientific research, business data processing and education. Derived from APL, J was designed as an executable mathematical notation by Dr. Kenneth E. Iverson and was implemented by Roger K.W. Hui. J unifies many areas of mathematics, has a simple consistent syntax with very few rules, yet includes a large number of functions and operators as tools for thinking and problem solving.
