Synopsis

Before modern computers were available, variational principles provided solutions to immediate engineering problems with unparalleled accuracy. They remain an elegant and powerful tool for researchers in a variety of fields. This text provides broad coverage of variational principles as they are applied to microwave, millimeter- wave, and optical circuits. The authors are both members of the Microwave Laboratory at the UniversitT Catholique de Louvain, Belgium. Annotation c. Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)

Synopsis

Numerical simulation, the basic tool for design of generalized distributed circuits, can be optimized in terms of complexity and computational time by using a variational formulation of the problem. This book describes the application of variational principles to the analysis of multilayed generalized circuits. Applications include a variety of transmission and guiding structures up to optical frequencies, such as multilayered transmission lines, planar transmission lines and optoelectronic devices.
