Fragility analysis has its origins in studies of the safety of nuclear power plants, but the subject has expanded rapidly to encompass the analysis of chemical plants, high-risk industrial processes, historical sites and monuments, and other vulnerable structures or processes. This study aims at a unification of the special methodologies developed in the early 1980s for disaster prevention. The text begins with a summary of the basic relations which characterize linear and nonlinear, static and dynamic structural analyses. The adequacy of each type of methodology is assessed against the mechanical model. The practical engineering applications of each model are illustrated by a number of examples taken from various branches of engineering and the aerospace industry.
