Synopsis
The main thrust of this book is directed towards improved navigation in ice-infested and ice-covered waters through the use of a radar system for the ice environment. Its major contribution is the analysis of data collected during a recent series of research experiments by the authors; the critical parameters analysed are polarisation and frequency. It shows how significant improvements in differentiating ice types and in the detectability of ice targets in open water can be achieved. A classification system capable of identifying ice which is threatening to a vessel is presented. The book ends with a description of a recommended radar system, tried and successful, for use in ice navigation.
