Semiconductor devices are susceptible to direct, indirect and latent damage from electrostatic discharge (ESD). The ongoing miniturisation of VLSI circuits and the increased use of digital electronics are important factors which make electronic systems more susceptible to ESD. The purpose of this book is to provide an understanding of the basic ESD phenomenon, by reviewing the necessary electrostatic principles and analysing a basic two body model. The various failure modes are examined, including problems unique to VLSI circuits. Protection methods, at both the device and system levels, are explored and the topics of ESD test standards and ESD control programs are discussed.
