Synopsis

A team of experts survey the various approaches to the problem of reconfiguring computing structures for efficient image processing, including single instruction multiple data architectures, serial architectures, multiple instruction multiple data architectures and special architectures. Treats issues involved in the development and use of VLSI modules in image processing systems.

Synopsis

In this volume invited authors survey various approaches to the problem of reconfiguring computing structures for efficient image processing. The chapters are arranged so as to group together the proponents of the main classes of solution to the problem. The first section deals with systems involving large arrays of identical processors, usually referred to as SIMD machines (Single Instruction stream, Multiple Data stream, after the classification scheme proposed by M.J. Flynn). In the second section, attention is given to architectures which are primarily serial, including those built around special-purpose VLSI image processing modules. Multiple Instruction stream, Multiple Data stream (MIMD) architectures are discussed in the third section which is therefore concerned with small assemblies of bus- connected processors, each operating on its own distinct sub- task. The final section provides a home for systems which do not fall naturally into any of the preceding sections and includes discussion of some of the so-called supercomputers which are not primarily intended for image processing.
