A properly co-ordinated protection system is vital to ensure that an electricity distribution network can operate within preset requirements for safety for individual items of equipment, staff and public, and the network overall. Suitable and reliable equipment should be installed on all circuits and electrical equipment, and , to do this, protective relays are used to initiate the isolation of faulted sections of a network in order to mainatin supplies elsewhere on the system. This then leads to an improved electricity service with better continuity and quality of supply. Written by two practising electrical engineers, this second edition of the bestselling Protection of Electricity Distribution Networks (1998) offers both practical and theoretical coverage of the technologies, from the classical electromechanical relays to the new numerical types that protect equipment on networks and in electrical plants.

Juan M. Gers obtained his BSc in Electrical Engineering at the University of Valle, Colombia, in 1977, his MSc in Power Systems Technology at the University of Salford, UK, in 1981 and his PhD at the University of Strathclyde, Scotland in 1998 for his research on Distribution Automation. In 1981 he founded the consulting firm GERS S.A. in Colombia, and a subsidiary company GERS USA in Florida in 2000; both companies specialise in system studies and designing and commissioning electrical engineering projects. Ted Holmes graduated from Queen Mary, University of London, in 1950 and joined the Central Electricity Generating Board, first commissioning power stations and 132 kV substations in eastern England, and then taking responsibility for the co-ordination of protection in substations and power stations in South West England. He later became System Design Engineer in the Midlands and in 1969 moved to the Midlands Electricity Board with responsibility for the planning of the Board s primary networks. In 1987 he became a freelance consultant lecturing on power distribution systems.
