Synopsis
This work is a facsimile reprint of Martin Agricola's original book of 1539, with a page by page translation from the Latin by John Trowell and the music examples transcribed into modern notation by Professor Brian Trowell. The original textbook was prepared by the music theorist and cantor of Magdeburg for use in Lutheran schools and summarizes medieval practice, while at the same time being written with an intrinsic understanding of the young learner's task. While Agricola's other treatises were written in the vernacular, "Rudimentes Musices" (at Georg Rhau's instigation) was written in Latin to conform with Melanchthon's educational policy. The book is intended for musicologists, historians, researchers in printing history, educationalists and sociologists.
