Synopsis

This text explains how to design and operate a wide range of small analogue circuits, both at low and medium frequencies. It is principally aimed at students taking a first course in analogue circuit design. Simple transistor and op-amp circuits are covered, along with the background material necessary to design them correctly - for example, complex numbers, AC theory, bode plots and power dupply design. Beginning with general observations about circuit design, the author then covers basic concepts. Subsequent chapters cover: diode models; bipolar junction transistors; transistor DC biasing; transistor small signal analysis; dimensional analysis; gain in dB; complex numbers; phasors; AC theory; bode plots; design of transistor amplifiers; amplifier classification; operational amplifiers; simple op-amp circuits; stability of a system with feedback; op-amp frequency response; active filters; DC power supplies; and problems. Design is emphasized throughout this book, particularly in the last chapter which contains over 50 "problems".

These are often fairly "open-ended" and require the application of a "commonsense" approach to design and an awareness of commonly available electrical equipment (for example - radios, toasters, cars and hair dryers). Their aim is to stimulate the engineer's natural curiosity. Standard tutorial questions are found at the end of most chapters.
