This second edition includes a new chapter on networking (looking particularly at systems such as the SUN NSS) and covers computer interconnections under UNIX. The emacs editor is also covered in a new appendix. This practical introduction to the Unix operating system (Berkeley 4.2 and AT&T System V, version 2) treats the subject in depth, yet requires no previous knowledge of computers or operating systems. However, access to a Unix system and knowledge of a programming language would be an advantage. The book first explains the kernel, shell and utilities, then files and directories. Commands are introduced, file creation dealt with, then the text progresses to help, filters, redirection and pipes. Next, the author explains user-to-user communication, compiling programs and the user's environment and history function. This work is based on courses given by the author at Bristol Polytechnic.
