Synopsis

Increasingly, software is relied upon to take charge of more and more complex systems. Mistakes can be expensive. This book aims to reduce the risk of errors by making software easier to understand. It also facilitates faster and cheaper maintainance. For these reasons, modular software design underlies most modern software development methodologies. It is applicable to most programming languages and implementation techniques. This book explains alternative views of the software development process, illustrating how modular software can be developed using a number of tried and tested formal and semi-formal techniques. The book begins with an overview of the development of large systems, going on to cover the analysis and high-level design phase. Later, it covers detailed design, module specification and implementation techniques, concluding with a discussion on the merits of testing. By the end of the book, the reader should be able to apply established software principles in a variety of development environments. Each chapter begins with an overview section to aid learning. A typical project is presented in the appendix.
