Synopsis

Although JSP (Jackson Structured Programming) is most often used with the COBOL language, they are usually separately taught. This book is an integrated approach which aims to provide benefits of consistency. Divided into two volumes, Volume One consists of four parts and covers the basics of COBOL and JSP. Part One introduces program production, diagrammatic aids to program design, the COBOL language, and data processing programs and data files. Part Two covers the fundamentals of JSP, then part three covers the COBOL language and the implementation of JSP designs. Finally, Volume One concludes with Part Four which is devoted to the design and implementation of typical data processing programs including sequential updates. Appendices to both volumes cover reserved words in COBOL 74 and 85 and COBOL statement formats. Volume Two consists of three further parts and covers more advanced features of COBOL and JSP. Part Five tackles further data and file handling. Part Six then covers "programs in parts" (subroutines, modular programming, boundary clashes and inversion, sequence clashes and sorts).

Finally Part Seven is devoted to further design solutions particularly those that involve the JSP technique of backtracking. The book includes many detailed solutions to commonly encountered data processing problems. To reinforce the topics as they are presented, each chapter concludes with a set of practical tasks, the majority of which are machine based.
