Synopsis
L.T.C. Rolt contributed to the history of engineering through his books on canals, railways and other topics. In 1973, Rolt was awarded an honorary degree by the University of Bath and the following year, after his death, the University decided to honour his memory by establishing a fund to appoint a number of Rolt Research Fellows. The nine Fellows who have been appointed so far have now prepared a joint volume of essays which incorporate work on their major research projects. The result is a series of insights covering topics as diverse as the engine of the "SS Great Britain", transistors and the wives of engineers.
