In earlier research not much attention was paid to the mental disorders that accompany multiple sclerosis. This is the more surprising since the impairment of the intellectual function and other mental disorders may be expected, as the disease gives rise to widespread lesion in the central nervous system. The symposium, held in Odense, Denmark, was the first at an international level to centre on the importance of understanding the psychological resources of the individual patient when planning a future that allows for a varying degree of handicap. Without this awareness patients may find themselves in situations of frustration and failure when intellectual capacity proves to be insufficient. It is hoped that the publication of this work will enable researchers to continue their research with a greater awareness of the psychiatric and psychological features the disease presents and in this way prove useful to physicians and psychologists in their efforts to build a future of the highest quality attainable for each patient.
This book should be of interest to all neurologists, neuropsychiatrists and neuropsychologists involved particularly with mental and intellecutal impairment devolved from MS."synopsis" may belong to another edition of this title.
