Synopsis
This volume, covering Northern England (north of a line drawn from the Severn to the Wash), completes Professor Young's guide to the changes in nomenclature, status and extent of all the parishes and other ecclesiastical and civil units in England. By means of a system of abbreviations, the editor has compressed into two volumes a large amount of information, covering the alterations affecting the ancient parishes, civil parishes, local government units and parliamentary constituencies, from the early Middle Ages to the Local Government Act of 1974, which created the modern divisions. The book is aimed at local historians and archivists as well as local government officers and solicitors.
