?An excellent book that ought to be included in any library collection where readers might have an interest in the rise of technology and/or policies for promoting or controlling technological development. Far from being a polemic on the evils of modern technology, as the title might seem to imply, this is a careful introduction to the role of technology in modern society. The fundamental point is that technology frees mankind from both drudgery and a narrow range of life-styles, and yet technology cannot be allowed to develop and operate without certain rules to protect society. However, those rules to govern technology cannot be so restrictive that they limit or curb the advance of technology to too great a degree. ... Braun's book makes a valuable contribution by setting the technological society issue in proper and balanced context. For all libraries.?-Choice
