Synopsis
The county of Somerset has a long and fascinating history, which included the oldest wooden trackway in the world once leading across its marshes and some of the most modern engineering enterprises. It was the producer of some of the best woollen cloth until the Industrial Revolution, of the finest cheeses, the sturdiest cattle fed on its rich grasslands. Its church towers are famous, its Arthurian tales legendary, its battlefield at Sedgemoor still capable of producing an emotional response.
