Spain and Portugal are two of the rising stars of the world of wine. This superbly illustrated book offers a detailed region-by-region guide to the wines of both nations, as well as information on grapes, vinification, the wine industry, and recommendations of what to buy. The book opens with a succinct introductory section that describes the wines of the Iberian peninsula and their many and varied styles; techniques of grape cultivation and harvest; methods of vinification and maturation, including details of how sherry, port, madeira and sparkling wine are made; and how to read the labels. The second part then looks at each wine producing region in Spain and Portugal, the wine laws of the two countries, and the different grape varieties from which wines are made. After general discussion of the areas, their climates and landscapes, specific wine producing towns and villages are examined, as are the most important growers and producers. Detailed colour maps of the areas are included here. The qualities of different types of wines are assessed, with particular reference to their taste, and the best estates are singled out for special attention. This book is illustrated throughout with hundreds of photographs and labels, as well as explanatory diagrams and charts.
