Synopsis

The books in this series are targeted towards sports which stretch the readers' outward bound instincts and desire to achieve fulfillment. Rock climbing can be a hazardous sport if you are not mentally or physically prepared for it. In this book the authors aim to equip the aspiring rock climber in every department. The basic theme is to take the reader from the very rudiments of the sport through, in some instances, to top level competition. Much emphasis is given to safety aspects, fitness and preparation, purchase and use of the most appropriate equipment and to encourage the thorough enjoyment of the sport for its own sake, regardless of competitive aspirations. The step-by-step photographs, diagrams and instructive text are designed to ensure that the reader fully understands what to do. John Barry is a leading UK alpinist and is attempting a mid-winter climb of K2, the world's highest mountain. Nigel Shepherd is holder of the Full Mountain Guides Carnet (the highest guiding qualification available) and a former Plas y Brenin instructor. He has climbed in Europe, America, Australasia and New Zealand.
