The main line railway route to the West, best known at one time for the "ACE" (the Atlantic Coast Express), was the first line to receive a privatised rail service - it is now the route of the "Super Sprinters" of Stagecoach, but also sees the occasional steam-hauled excursion. This text provides a comprehensive history and description of the route and its operation, primarily in the days of steam, although the story is brought right up to the present time. It details the planning and construction of the railway from Salisbury to Exeter via Yeovil, the route and all stations on the line, from opening to the present day, or closure and is fully illustrated with photographs showing locomotions and train formations of all periods, as well as the stations and good yards. There is comprehensive coverage of the signalling and signal boxes, including specially drawn signalling diagrams and station track layout plans. Both authors have worked on this line, one on the footplate, the other in the signalling department.
