As the saying "iron is the state" signifies, the iron and steel industry has been the key industry in every industrialized country. At the outset of the Industrial Revolution, Britain was the largest producer of iron, but was surpassed by the USA and Germany in the late 19th century. Since the mid-20th century, Japan has been a major producer, second to the USSR. In analyzing why and how supremacy over the industry changed from one country to another, business historians from Britain, the USA, France, Germany, Korea and Japan present case studies in which such factors as technological innovation, resources and markets, constraints placed by labour unions, management's innovative flair, the capital market, and international competitiveness are reviewed.
