Concentrating mainly on Chaucer, studies also focus on other topics from English and related literatures of the fourteenth century. Links between the characters in the `Miller's Tale' and their antecedents in medieval drama are brought together; Bakhtinian theory is applied to Troilus and Criseydeto redefine the poem's genre; the way in which translations of Boethius shaped Chaucer's formation of the second `Canticus Troili' is explored; and the meaning and significance of the often overlooked `Hugelyn' section of the `Monk's Tale' are considered. There is also an important survey of `The Current State of Pearl Criticism'. The wideranging review section, a particular strength of this journal, covers new titles by, among others, P.J.C. Field, Larry D. Benson, A.C. Spearing, and Barbara A. Hanawalt. MICHAEL N. SALDA teaches at the Department of English, University of Southern Mississippi; JEAN E. JOSTteaches in the Department of English, Bradley University. Contributors: PETER G. BEIDLER, JENNIFER McNAMARA BAILEY, CHRISTINE G. BERG, SISTER ELAINE MARIE GLANZ, ANNE M. DICKSON, TRACY A.
