Synopsis

Leslie Sands was born and educated in Bradford and at the University of Leeds. Following his demobilisation in 1946 he began a lifelong career in the theatre by becoming an actor. Since that point he has been consistently involved in many capacities within the theatre and also television and film, working as an actor, scriptwriter and playwright. His stage plays include the trio of riotous comedies, Basinful of the Briny, Beside the Seaside, and Good Old Summertime, an adaptation of Emile Zolas novel Therèse Raquin, and the thrillers Something to Hide, Intent to Murder, and Cat's Cradle. His work as a writer for television ranges from individual plays to episodes for major series such as Van der Valk and Z-Cars. ########## In an isolated farmhouse on the Yorkshire moors, an investigation is underway into the suspicious death of a local farmer who died in mysterious circumstances. Sergeant Caleb Cuff, now retired from the service and living in a nearby village, is reluctantly drawn into the ensuing tangle of accusations and recriminations due to his relationship with the family, and in particular his past relationship with the newly widowed Nell Norton. Nell's daughter has encouraged village gossip by her lack of compassion for her father's death and, taunted by her cousin Ritchie, she soon comes to believe that Cluff may indeed be her real father. When Ritchie's body is found floating in a local canal, Cluff battles wits with the local CID to solve both puzzles, as the misery and grief from a lifetime of self-doubt and guilt is brought explosively to the surface in this poignant and gripping drama.
