Synopsis
`The Works of Love' provides a representative selection from a Yugoslav poet who is increasingly recognized as a major voice in the mainstream of European poetry. In his concern to interpret the past through the present, the present through the past, Lalic has affinities with other cosmopolitan poets such as Eliot and Quasimodo. His richly-coloured Mediterranean style speaks with a reflective depth and immediacy, moving easily between the personal and the metaphysical. Francis R Jones's translations and his selection of the poems were made in close consultation with the poet.

About the Author
Ivan V Lalic was born in 1931. Nine volumes of his poetry have appeared in Yugoslavia. He is also a distinguished translator and critic.
Francis R Jones was born in Yorkshire in 1955. He studied modern languages at St John's College, Cambridge and modern Serbo-Croat poetry at the University of Sarajevo.
