Synopsis

This is David Holbrook's fifth volume of poetry, and his first since 1969. In recent years he has published a number of critical studies of twentieth-century art, notably on Dylan Thomas, Gustav Mahler and Sylvia Plath, and his analysis of the decline of recent poetry, `Lost Bearings in English Poetry'. His critical work is integral with his central creative preoccupation as exemplified in these poems, in which he finds ways of establishing a sense of meaning in daily existence. The warmth and humanity of his writing, especially about family life, is apparent.
