Synopsis

Please note that this book does not provide ready-made designs to stitch. This book is focused on translating actual flowers into stitchery. Flowers have always been one of the main subjects of textile designs, and it seems that a love of flowers and embroidery often go together. For enthusiasts, translating flowers into stitchery is one of the lasting pleasures of life. It is not always easy, however to translate an idea into reality, and this book is intended to help the reader through the various stages of planning and working a flower embroidery from the idea to the finished piece of work. Plans have to be based upon fact, so the reader needs to start by asking themselves some questions such as 'What am I going to make?'. Is the reader going to develop an idea to their own satisfaction or to decorate fabric with flowers for a specific purpose? Will the embroidery hang behind glass for decades, or will it be worn or used in a practical way? If the reader doesn't have any definite ideas, then it is hoped that this book will give them some inspiration from the suggestions within its pages. Technique: Different kinds of embroidery have their own type of design, vocabulary of stitches and choice of fabric and threads. Three very different techniques are shown in this book - Surface Stitchery (pages 14/15 and 18/19), Shadow Work (pages 22/23) and Quilting (pages 26/27). Every technique has its own method and requires particular fabric and threads. The reader is invited to choose the technique that attracts them and which is best suited to the project they have in mind. A Design is a working drawing - a clear outline of the flower motif as it will appear on the fabric, with the elements of the pattern arranged to suit the reader's purpose. The type of design will vary according to the embroidery method chosen. For example, a working drawing for a needle-painted flower will be realistic and may show the grain of the petal and the highlights
