A modern town or city with its high rise flats and office blocks, crowded streets and polluted atmosphere is hardly the place where you would expect to find much wildlife. Yet with a keen eye and a little detective work, a surprising number of animals can be found living in the centres and suburbs of towns and cities. Before writing this book, Cathy Kilpatrick wrote to various magazines and newspapers asking for people to let her know of their experiences of urban wildlife. The response was good and many of the instances related are drawn from the letters which she received. The first part of the book describes the way in which animals have adapted to town life and the reasons why they have done this. It also deals with the individual habitats found in built-up areas which support animal life. These habitats include suburban gardens, city parks, reservoirs and even houses. The remainder of the book contains descriptions of the mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians and insects which the reader may reasonably expect to see in urban areas. Size: Sq 8vo.
