About the Author

General Sir David Richards is Chief of the Defence Staff of the British military. He joined the British Army in 1971 and his operational tours include Northern Ireland, East Timor, Afghanistan and Sierra Leone.

Dr Greg Mills is the Director of the Brenthurst Foundation. He previously served as the National Director of the South African Institute of International Affairs from 1996 to 2005.
