Soft cover. Condition: Near Fine. Racey Helps (illustrator). 1st Edition. Kingcup Cottage Racey Helps The Medici Society Ltd., London, 1962 Medici Books for Children series ISBN: 9780855030193 / 0855030194 (standard for the series) Format: Oblong paperback, 24 unpaginated pages. Stapled pictorial glossy wrappers with vibrant full-colour illustrations throughout. Condition: Near Fine A very attractive copy. Covers are bright and clean with only the most minimal edge rubbing. Pages are fresh, colours vivid, and binding firm. The only flaw is a small, neat contemporary inscription on the front endpaper (easily overlooked and does not affect the text or illustrations). No other marks, tears, creasing, or significant wear. An excellent example of this charming 1960s children's title. Delightful first-edition (or early printing) of Kingcup Cottage, written and gloriously illustrated by Racey Helps. Francesca the Frog rents the delightfully damp Kingcup Cottage beside Heron Lake. She throws a birthday party, but her woodland guests are put off by the watery location. With gentle help from Pinny the Hedgehog (and a host of other creatures), she learns to host a far more successful second party high and dry in Toadstool Dell. Filled with Helps' signature warm, detailed watercolours of anthropomorphic animals amid kingcups, water lilies, dragonflies, and marsh flowers. The illustrations are full of whimsy, humour, and tiny naturalistic touches that make this a standout in British post-war children's literature. About the Author & Illustrator: Racey Helps (1913-1970) Angus Clifford Racey Helps (born 2 February 1913, Bristol; died 1970, Barnstaple) was a popular English children's author, illustrator, and commercial artist. Privately educated and trained at the West of England College of Art, he worked in antiquarian bookselling before becoming a full-time creator. His gently moral tales feature woodland animals and birds in simple, engaging prose, always accompanied by his own lively, colourful illustrations. Helps also produced a vast output of postcards, greeting cards, jigsaws, playing cards, and wrapping paper ? much of it for the Medici Society. Other notable titles include Diggy Takes His Pick (1964), Guinea-Pig Podge, Just Wilberforce, and various picture books. His work continues to charm collectors and readers for its nostalgic, nature-filled appeal. Edition & Rarity Notes First published 1962 by The Medici Society as part of their popular Medici Books for Children series. This is the classic oblong format with pictorial covers and the original back-cover listing of other titles in the range. Highly sought after by collectors of illustrated children's books, animal stories, and mid-20th-century British picture books.
