Synopsis
South Africa has rich diversity of frog species represented in almost every type of habitat. Their presence generally indicates a healthy ecosystem and recent reports of a world-wide decline in frog numbers have alarmed scientists and generated considerable interest and research both in South Africa and abroad.;Since its first appearance in 1979, this study has been widely regarded as the standard work on the frogs of the region. Now this popular guide has been updated to include new species descriptions, changes in taxonomy, behavioural observations and developments in field ecology. It contains detailed descriptions of amphibian species found throughout South Africa, and identification in the field is facilitated by improved layout and a simple classification guide. All entries are accompanied by informative descriptions as well as black and white and colour photographs, distribution maps and sonograms which visually portray calls.
