Synopsis
This is an anthology of new writing on racing, by well-known figures inside and outside the sport. The collection, often humorous, encompasses personal reminiscence, celebrations, and great horses, jockeys and races, as well as short stories. The pieces include former handicapper Miles Napier's portrait of the first keeper of the royal running horses, Julian Wilson's cri de coeur for more elegant days, Tim Heald's account of a day at Chepstow, and Richard Pitman's first-hand view of the perils faced by the jump jockey. The fiction includes a Runyonesque tale of low-life bookies by Geoff O'Hara (himself an ex-bookie), and a flesh-creeping tale by Simon Raven.
