Synopsis
This biography of the Essex and England cricketer, Graham Gooch, traces his career from its erratic beginnings to his standing as an established and highly successful Test Match batsman and captain. At an age when many players are planning retirement or winding down their careers, he has driven himself on to new levels of achievement, and his extraordinary exploits in 1990, followed by success against the might of the West Indies, have raised his stature to new heights. All this has been achieved not just through talent, but through imposing upon himself disciplines that are as ruthless as they are rigorous. His standard of fitness is an example to men half his age. Based on interviews with Gooch and his family, the book also considers the paradoxes in his personality. At times stubborn and perverse, he admits to having a miserable appearance on television - but, as the author sets out to show, the dour, unsmiling image is far from the whole picture. Ivo Tennant has also written cricket biographies of Sir Frank Worrell and the Cowdrey family.
