Synopsis

This is an essay by Andrea Tarsia. This book accompanies the fourth part in Whitechapel Gallery's series of exhibitions which examine the impact and legacy of performance art from the 1960s to today. In this part, the performative gesture is seen through its reproduction in film and video, as a trace of the artist's presence in the original event. This includes works such as Aernout Mik's "Pulverous" (2003) which observes the scene through the gaze of the supermarket CCTV camera, and Francesco Vezzoli's "Trailer for a Remake of Gore Vidal's Caligula" (2005), a mock five-minute trailer for a non-existent film, which includes celebrities such as Helen Mirren and Courtney Love. This book includes written descriptions of each of the fourteen works featured in the exhibition, as well as biographies of the artists.
