Synopsis

The strange deeds of Antony Ferrara, as herein related, are intended to illustrate certain phases of Sorcery as it was formerly practised (according to numerous records) not only in Ancient Egypt but also in Europe, during the Middle Ages. In no case do the powers attributed to him exceed those which are claimed for a fully equipped Adept.Arthur Henry Sarsfield Ward, better known as Sax Rohmer, was a prolific English novelist best remembered for his series of novels featuring the master criminal Dr. Fu Manchu. He worked as a poet, songwriter and comedy sketch writer for Music hall performers before creating the Sax Rohmer persona and pursuing a career writing weird fiction. His first published work came in 1903, when the short story “The Mysterious Mummy” was sold to Pearson’s Weekly. Rohmer’s main literary influences seem to have been Edgar Allan Poe, Arthur Conan Doyle and M. P. Shiel.

Review

“In this book he attains climaxes of such mastery of the horrible and the inhuman, that I am not shy to say few besides works by Lovecraft and Chambers themselves can outmaster them.”—Vault of Evil

“...fast-paced, clever, ingeniously contrived and thoroughly enjoyable... with vampires, black magic and occult powers that have lain dormant since the days of Ancient Egypt.”—Vintage Pop Fictions

“[Rohmer’s] chief love was the mysticism of Egypt and this is clearly apparent in his best novel, Brood of the Witch Queen.”—Mike Ashley, Who’s Who in Horror and Fantasy Fiction
