Synopsis
A fortunate and unexpected inheritance gives an ordinary and unassuming bank clerk with reclusive tendencies a chance to make all his dreams come true. Roger Menheniot abandons wartime London to buy Rosemellian, his Cornish ancestral home. A psychologically-driven story of despair, tragedy, obsession and love is revealed against a backdrop of the Cornish countryside as a web of complex and intriguing relationships are played out. Henry Savage, an old sage is haunted by the death of his first wife. Bella is an alluring but threatening influence. Annie Hocking is the spinster whose bitter resentments underpin much of the action. And, Kitty attracts Roger as if to a saviour. The story exposes human weakness and egotism as Roger is forced to reassess his whole way of life and his attitudes towards others in his journey of self-discovery and revelation.
