Alvis is a Company that has been spared the indignities which many makes have suffered in their closing days. From 1920 until car production stopped in I967, Alvis cars have never lost their identity. Neither has their well-earned reputation been diluted by mergers and badge engineering. No doubt some models were better than others; it is not thought that Alvis made a bad model but that their finest products were very good indeed. A dedicated workforce under brilliant and perseverant leadership took Alvis to the forefront of the industry in the design of independent suspension, gearboxes and front wheel drive. In other fields their high quality engineering went into aero-engines, one of which gave lift-off to the first hovercraft. Their armoured vehicles are also still in demand the world over. This meticulously researched story reveals why Alvis survived so many other high quality car makers and signposts the story of the company's success in a risk-fraught business.

Alvis has for eight decades been associated with the design and manufacture of thoroughbred cars. But right from the early days the Coventry precision engineering firm recognized that diversification was essential for survival. The Alvis group is today a significant name in the defence, transport, aerospace, consumer, and medical optical sectors. This text, now in its third edition, provides an up-to-date business, design and engineering story. The company has had racing and record-breaking successes, the Alvis Owners Club has more than 3000 members, and the second edition received an award of distinction from the Society of Automotive Historians Inc,
