Sources and resources for local studies
A very useful guide to the sources for studying local history in Ulster. The text explains the historical units of administration in Ireland and includes a survey (by century) of the documentary and other sources. There is a special section dealing with the land issue of the nineteenth century. The third section covers record offices, museums and libraries inside and outside Ulster, with valuable information on their collections, opening hours etc.

Information is included:

Townlands, parishes, baronies, counties, poor law unions, state papers, surveys, yeomanry lists, poll tax returns, hearth money rolls, censuses, valuation records, ordnance survey, education records, magistrates reports, parliamentary commissions, land records, legal records, wills, church records, gravestone inscriptions, maps, directories, newspapers, journals, photographs and much more...

Dr Collins is an historian and former cultural traditions fellow at the Institute of Irish Studies and his publications include Nationalism and unionism: conflict in Ireland 1885–1921.
