From the Publisher

Biography of Jack Sayers, former editor of Belfast Telegraph
Jack Sayers established the Belfast Telegraph as the paper commanding the greatest ever sales in the North (over 200,000) with a readership that straddled the sectarian divide. Through him, liberal unionism was made acceptable, even fashionable, for the first time since 1903. At a critical time in Ulster’s history, he fomented public debate, and ironically contributed to the permanent division of unionism in Ulster, and the subsequent imposition of Direct Rule, with all that that implied.

In its attempt to rescue from oblivion a leading political figure, the book provides a lively narrative of post-war Ulster, and gives an insider’s perspective of the first major effort to reform Northern Ireland, and its disintegration amid imminent civil war. Fascinating use is made of sources such as letters and radio transcripts.

Andrew Gailey teaches at Eton College, and has written extensively on constructive unionism, including Ireland and the Death of Kindness.
