Synopsis

1st Edition, 268pp long and indexed with dustjacket and priced at 42 shillings, this book published by Model & Allied Publications in 1968 is based on LBSC's 3.5 inch gauge locomotive TICH, which is said to be one of the best-known of LBSC's many locomotives that he built and serves as an introduction to model locomotive building for every enthusiast who's interested and perhaps who hopes to own a lathe at some point! LBSC's encouragement and simple lucid instructions (adapted into book form from the magazine Model Engineer by its then editor Martin Evans) should allow the beginner to bring this project to a successful conclusion. For those who don't know, LBSC is the pen-name of a former engineman of the London, Brighton and South Coast Railways who retired to become a shining example to model engineers everywhere. After the normal Foreword and Introduction, the chapter order is this: 1. Making A Start; 2. Building the Running Gear; 3. Coupling Rods & Feed Pump; 4. Machining the Cylinders; 5. Guide Bars & Crossheads; 6. Making the Valve Gear; 7. Steam Pipes & Lubricator; 8.Starting on the Boiler; 9. Fitting the Boiler Tubes; 10. Staying the Boiler; 11. Making the Smokebox; 12. The Regulator and Superheater; 13. Starting on the Boiler Fittings; 14. Making the Grate & Ashpan; 15. Starting on the Platework; 16. The Final Details, and finally 17. Firing and Driving The Engine. The book draws on the works of well-known experts such as Mr. G. S. Willoughby (articles have appeared in the magazine 'Model Engineer' from time to time), C.M. Keiller, "L.B.S.C" and Mr. J. N. Maskelyne. Includes both scale diagrams of locomotive parts as well as photographs to show the "live" version. Diagrams included: main frames, buffer beams, horns, axleboxes, axles, boiler (general arrangement), front elevation, side elevation, wheels, crankpins, coupling rods, valve gear eccentrics, pump stay, pump eccentric, strap, rod, wrist pin, feed pump, pump ram, top & bottom body connections, etc
