Synopsis

This is a full-scale translation and commentary in English of Aurelius Victor's "De Caesaribus", which provides a brief survey of the emperors of Rome from Octavian Augustus in 30 BC to Constantius II in AD 360. The book comprises an introduction, translation and full historical/historiographical commentary, and contains maps, a select bibliography and an index. In the introduction Aurelius Victor's life and career are discussed, together with his sources, methodology, style, the date of composition and subsequent tradition. In the commentary parallel citations of other ancient sources are made and their significance and reliability are considered. This book is primarily intended for students of the Late Roman Empire whose linguistic knowledge is limited, but it should also prove useful to specialists in fourth-century history and historiography.
