Synopsis

This book, together with its set of computer programs, is the first of a unique new sequence of computer-aided engineering texts relating different kinds of physical phenomena to engineering systems. It contains four topics, comprising a user's guide and instructional manual covering the physical and mathematical model upon which the topic is based. The authors consider the partial differential equation (the transient heat equation in two space dimensions), thereby providing the basis for an exploration of a wide range of physical phenomena. The solution method (that of finite differences) is derived from first principles; whilst computer programs illustrate not only the important practical applications, but also topics such as convergence efficiency and accuracy of the solution procedure, the latter translated into a computer program in Fortran 77. Suggestions for preparation and operation of computer programs are provided.

There is a listing of programs for those readers who may wish to enter and run such programs: alternatively, they are available as software from the publishers, devised on a Fortran 77, although microcomputers such as the IBM PC and others act as realistic hosts.
