Fortran, one of the most important and widespread programming languages, was originally designed for off-line programme preparation and batch processing. However, Fortran today is used increasingly in an interactive environment, from terminals linked to a large mainframe, or on single user and personal micro-computers. This book bases its introduction to the lanuguage on just such an interactive use, cutting ties with the batch processing shades of the past. The authors stress the first stages of good programming practice, the accurate specification of problems, and well-organized programme plans. Once these principles are defined, the main features of Fortran 77 are introduced. The emphasis throughout is placed on the need for a rigorous approach to algorithmic problem-solving, and the practical benefits to be gained from the adoption of a structured modular methodology.
