Synopsis
The Nazis and their collaborators murdered 1.5 million Jews in the Ukraine. But, for a long time the subject of the Holocaust was a forbidden subject not only in the USSR but throughout the socialist bloc. It has only recently become a respectable research topic. This is a collection of 86 personal testimonies from survivors of the Shoah in the Ukraine. The objective of the book is not to relate historical facts and data but to relate a story of the inhumane experiences of people who were destined to die but managed to survive. The idea for the book was stimulated by Zabarkow's participation in a project (organised in 1994 by the Documentation Centre of Yale University) to collect audio and video testimonies of Holocaust survivors from the Ukraine.

About the Author
Esther Jilovsky is Research Fellow in the School of Languages and Linguistics and part of the Affiliated Faculty of the Program for Jewish Culture and Society at the University of Melbourne. Jordana Silverstein is a historian of modern Jewish identities, based in Melbourne. David Slucki is Visiting Assistant Professor in the Yaschik/Arnold Jewish Studies Program at the College of Charleston. Previously, he was an Early Career Development Fellow in 2011–13 at Monash University.
