The 40th anniversary of the discovery of the ^D*p and V particles was celebrated in July 1987 by an International Conference held in Bristol. 40 years of Particle Physics records the 13 invited papers presented at the conference and reports on the discussions generated. The book successfully captures the flavour of research into elementary particles in the immediate post-war era. Nine selected reprints from the period document the development of the photographic techniques by which the tracks of individual nuclear particles can be detected. Forty years have elapsed since the discovery of the pi meson, which heralded the onset of the explosive development of the physics of elementary particles. Physicists who participated in that work (Fowler, Conversi, Dalitz, Marshak, many others) came together at the University of Bristol in July, 1987 to share their recollections of the experience.
