Synopsis
The aim of this study is to describe how an understanding of structure, thermodynamics and electrical properties can be used to explain some of the choices of materials already used by the microelectronics community, and also to design new materials for specific applications. The mechanical, electrical, chemical and optical properties of microelectronic materials are related both to one another and to the performance required in each kind of device or system. Emphasis is placed on demonstrating that the phase chemistry of semiconductor and metal systems must be considered before sensible decisions can be taken as to how to design combinations of materials which will be stable for long periods in service.
