Review

It is the most thorough and authoritative analysis of foreign aid that I have seen. It is balanced and well argued and based on a broad range of relevant sources. In the literature on development, it is a landmark that no doubt will attract interest among both academics and professional aid administrators. - Goran Hyden ... truly timely and may be considered as definitive ... he succeeds brilliantly in his purpose. - Hans Singer in DEVELOPMENT POLICY REVIEW Roger Riddell has made a major contribution to the current debate about overseas aid. His book is unique in containing an assessment of the ethical basis for aid, as well as an examination of the theoretical cases for and against it, and the evidence about what has worked and what has not. No previous book has covered this range of matter with anything approaching such scrupulousness and objectivity. - Robert Cassen in THE GUARDIAN This book is essential reading for those, especially development professionals, who want to understand the controversies surrounding aid over the past decade. Riddell presents an excellent review of the theoretical debate. The book is balanced, closely argued and contains many insights into the complex factors which determine whether aid works or not. - Brian Thompson (ODA) in APPROPRIATE TECHNOLOGY Riddell's thoughtful book puts the debate over foreign aid in the right perspective. - K. Gyimah-Brimpon in CHOICE
