Synopsis

Published in 1980 by Model & Allied Publications (Argus Books), this 224 page paperback details how to build a 3.5 inch gauge British Railways (BR) 2-10-0 locomotive. Martin Evans presents the reader with all the information required to construct and exact scale model of this famous engine in an authoritative text supported by diagrams and a fine set of photographs. No. 92220 was completed at Swindon Works in 1960 and was the very last steam locomotive to be built for Britain's state railways operator and owner - British Railways. It was the final unit of 999 steam locomotives built from the British Railways standard designs which had been the guiding force in locomotive design and construction since nationalisation in 1948. These locomotives were originally designed for fast freight duties, but occasionally set forth pulling express passenger trains. Although the ten-coupled wheels were believed to prevent the locomotives from reaching high speed, they could get up to 90 m.p.h.! Chapters: Introduction; 1. "LBSC Leads Off with a Description of the Wheels. 2. The Wheels. 3. Coupling Rods. 4. The Pony Truck. 5. The Boiler Feed Pump. 6. The Piston Valve Cylinders. 7. The Valves. 8. Valve Gear. 9. Valve Gear for Slide Valve Cylinders. 10. Cylinder Lubricator. 11. First Details of the Boiler. 12. Oxy-Acetylene Boilersmithing. 13. Martin Evans Now Takes Up the Story. 14. The Tender. Index
