Edward Jones is a professional artist and has based this work upon his own teaching courses. This book aims to present a complete art course which covers painting and drawing in all modern media, accessible to leisure painters of reasonable competence as well as art students. The author instructs in the skills and techniques, supporting his text with examples. A section on colour theory introduces the technique of painting in all the principal media. The remainder of the book is given over to consideration of themes and specific subject matter, including avant-garde painting, presentation of work and thoughts of the forward progression of the visual arts. The importance of observation is stressed throughout and it aims to present ideas and methods clearly, avoiding artists' jargon. Edward Jones has exhibited at the Royal Institute of Oil Painters, the Royal Portrait Society and the Royal Academy. He has also painted many portraits for media figures including David Suchet of the Royal Shakespeare Company and a commission for the Lawn Tennis Association.
