THIS book represents the results of about five years' research into a subject that has interested me for almost 30 years. It is my tribute to Lancashire folks connection with something their history is linked with so strongly. It is a personal feeling that I have, though I know I share it with thousands of northern people, and indeed with everyone who has ever worn clogs. Words cannot express that feeling, which started in the days that I lived under my grandmother's influence. She started it all, so it's my tribute to her and to every grandmother. One thing has driven me — that the story of clogs should be told, and that I should be the one to tell it. I have wanted to make the book enjoyable as well as informative and to present the many facets concerning clogs, which is why I've included historical with manufacturing information, and poems with memories of a world which has passed. I have enjoyed researching and writing, and hope that you will enjoy reading. My thanks are due to Brian Ormerod (another Accrington lad), to those people who have given me permission to include their poems in the book, and to the countless people who talked and wrote to me during the time I was preparing the book
